Sustainable together Through Environmental Management

Down District Council are leading the way in their area by committing to improve their environmental performance.  They are one of nine cross border councils that are participating in the exciting environmental project called STEM (Sustainable together Through Environmental Management).

The STEM Project is offering FREE Environmental Management Systems to 270 SME’s within the nine council areas (30 per council area). Southern Group Environmental Health Committee are also participating in the innovative project, thought to be the largest of its kind in Europe!

www.stemproject.comThe STEM project is an initiative funded by the EU INTERREG IIIA programme for Ireland/Northern Ireland, nine local cross border Councils and Southern Group Environmental Health Committee (SGEHC).  The project is being delivered by Southern Group Environmental Health Committee and is co-ordinated by East Border Region Environmental Working Group.

Environmental issues are very much to the fore across all sectors of industry and commerce.  Regardless of the size of an organisation or the nature of its operation, they will have an impact on their environment, some more so than others. The STEM Project is encouraging both Councils and Businesses to take a pro-active approach to managing their environmental impacts by implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS).  With the joint efforts from the local authorities and the businesses, the project will have a positive effect on our local community, preventing pollution of our waterways, land and air.

The sheer size of the STEM Project is an indication of the overriding concern felt by our Councils regarding the impact that environmental issues have on our day to day lives and reaffirms the commitment shared by our Councils and Europe to improve our environmental performance, what better way then to lead by example!

This is an excellent opportunity for SMEs to avail of free advice and technical support to implement an EMS, a service that would otherwise cost them thousands of pounds in consultancy fees.

Implementing and receiving certification for an EMS is a highly visible and public way for an organisation to demonstrate its commitment towards continual environmental improvement.

The nine cross-border councils involved on the project include; Ards Borough Council, Armagh City & District Council, Banbridge District Council, Craigavon Borough Council, Down District Council, Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council, Louth County Council, Monaghan County Council, Newry and Mourne District Council.

The STEM Project is available to all SMEs who have a location within any of the above nine councils.  If you are interested in registering your business onto the Project, please contact the Marketing Officer on 028 3751 5810 or e-mail stem@sgehc.com.
