Down District Council, in association with Volunteer Now, is encouraging the people of Down district to nominate local volunteers to be an Olympic Torchbearer before the closing date on 29 June 2011.
Councillor Dermot Curran, Chairman of Down District Council said, “Volunteers’ Week offers us the chance to recognise and celebrate volunteers in our local communities. It’s also a great opportunity to really think about the people who make a difference, and this year, nominate them to be an Olympic Torchbearer. Torchbearers should be inspirational people who make a real difference to our local area, and I think all the volunteers in our community most definitely fulfill these criteria.”
Wendy Osborne OBE, Chief Executive of Volunteer Now said, “We are very excited about the Torch coming to Northern Ireland in 2012, most especially because it will be here during our annual Volunteers’ Week celebrations, 1 to 7 June 2012, making the journey across Northern Ireland with overnight stops in Portrush on Sunday 3, Derry / Londonderry on Monday 4, Newry on Tuesday 5, and Belfast on Wednesday 6 June 2012.
She added, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and it would be a tremendous accolade for volunteers in our community to take part.”
Further information about making a nomination is available online at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay.
The deadline for nominations is 11.59pm on Wednesday 29 June 2011.
