Released: 12 December 2011

Down District Policing Partnership in conjunction with Down District Community Safety Partnership held its first Winter Warmer Event on Thursday 8 December in the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle.

The event which was attended by over 130 people from across the district, aimed to inform elderly and vulnerable people of the practical crime prevention steps they can take before, during and after the festive season. The event also highlighted the benefits they are entitled to such as rates relief, warm home grants, lone pensioner allowance and help with housing benefit.

Down District Policing Partnership Chairman, Councillor William Dick opened the event stating, “It is great to see such a large turnout at the district’s inaugural Winter Warmer Event. It is important to provide people with practical tips on how they can keep themselves and their homes safe and secure before during and after this festive season. I am also pleased that 16 agencies including, Good Morning Down, Citizens Advice Bureau and the Down Secured Project have set up information points to bring their services directly to the people of Down district.”

Hilary Doherty, Outreach Officer at A2B said, “This event is a great opportunity for people in the Down area to find out more about the benefits that are available to them. Everyone’s thoughts are turning to food and fuel bills so it is important to check your benefits in case you are missing out.”

Down District Community Safety Partnership Chairman, Councillor Mickey Coogan closed the event and commented, “This was a well organised and very well attended event that answered a lot of the questions people have in relation to safety and benefits. If elderly and vulnerable people do face difficulty over the winter months I would strongly encourage them to contact their local councillor or some of these agencies here today as help is always available.”
