Postal Naming & Numbering

Postal Naming & Numbering

The Public and Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1949 provides that the naming of all new housing developments is the responsibility of local Councils.

Down District Council is therefore responsible for formal approval of the names of all developments in its area.  Developers are required to submit proposals for the naming of developments to the Council before advertising properties for sale.

The Council encourages appropriate names which relate to our Ulster heritage or are derived from the local area.

For dwellings in rural areas it is the Council’s policy that the Townland's name should be used as a primary part of the address.

All private dwellings are also numbered by the Council as soon as building has begun or when an owner requires to reside in a mobile home on the site.
